ISMYRNE (2016) documents a lengthy encounter between Joana Hadjithomas and the artist/poet Etel Adnan. Friends since the early 1990s, they grew close, bound by a tumultuous link to their ancestral homeland of Smyrna (now known as Izmir), a city that they had never visited. Families of both Hadjithomas and Adnan were forced into exile from Smyrna after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Conveying intimate stories, they realise that, for them both, Ismyrne is a constructed imaginary, parlayed to them through a contentious narration of violence.

يوثق فيلم "سميرنا" (2016) حوارية مطولة جرت بين جوانا حاجي توما والفنانة والشاعرة إيتيل عدنان. فقد جمعت بينهما صداقة منذ أوائل التسعينيات، ونمت وتطورت على مرّ السنين، وارتبطتا بأرض "سميرنا" (المعروفة حالياً بـ "إزمير") رغم أنهما لم تزوراها قط. نُفيت عائلتا حاجي توما وعدنان من سميرنا بعد انهيار الإمبراطورية العثمانية، فاستعاضتا عنها بقصصها وبسكنى خيالية فيها، وراحتا تكتشفانها معاً عبر محادثة متخيلة عن العنف الذي لحق بها.
